Matthew was born in 1823 in Huddersfield.  Matthew's father was Jonas Hirst and his mother was Hannah Eastwood.  His maternal grandparents were George Eastwood and Elizabeth Woodhead.  He died at the age of 70 in June 1893 in Huddersfield.



Matthew's first family with Lydia Chettham

‌Matthew and Lydia were married in a religious ceremony in December 1852 in Huddersfield.1 


Matthew's second family with Amelia Fox

‌Matthew and Amelia were married in a religious ceremony in June 1854 in Halifax.1   They had a son and two daughters, named Herbert, Sarah and Lucy.
