Septimus' father was George Johann Jacob Heinz and his mother was Bertha Jane Westpfahl. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Friedrich Heinz and Margaretha Catherina Wetterroth; his maternal grandparents were Heinrich Christian Frederick Westpfahl and Metha (Margaretha) Sophie Albertine Düssmann. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, John, Charles, James, Magdalena and Bertha. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
