John was born in 1806 in Bolton and his baptism took place on January 5th, 1806 at St. Mary (Deane).1  John's father was James Flitcroft and his mother was Mary Cartwright. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Sarah, Mary, Happy and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
