James was born in 1816 in Bolton and his baptism took place on April 13th, 1816 at St. Mary (Deane).1  James' father was James Flitcroft and his mother was Mary Cartwright. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Sarah, Mary, Happy and Hannah.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
