Martha's father was Charles Dunn and her mother was Martha Orrell. Her maternal grandparents were John Mather Orrell and Martha Gradwell. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Joseph, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Mary and Lily. She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
