Joseph's father was Charles Dunn and his mother was Martha Orrell. His maternal grandparents were John Mather Orrell and Martha Gradwell. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Mary, Martha and Lily. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
