Joseph's father was John Dodd and his mother was Mary Jones. His paternal grandparents were Edward Dodd and Ann Bennett; his maternal grandparents were <unknown> and Elizabeth Jones. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Edward, John, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Sidney. He was the third youngest of the seven known children.
