Samuel was born in 1849. Samuel's father was Edward Davies and his mother was Sarah Griffiths. His paternal grandparents were Edward Davies and Rachel Millington. He had a brother and five sisters, named John, Mary, Rachel, Ellen, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the youngest of the seven children.
