Nelly was born in 1884 in Blackburn.1  Nelly's father was John Robert Cooper and her mother was Mary Jane Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Jane Bamber. She had a brother and a sister, named Arthur and Jane.  She was the oldest of the three known children.
