Norman was born in March 1891 in Darcy Lever.1  Norman's father was John Thomas Clayton and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Stott.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Stott and Mary Lomax. He had two sisters named Gertrude and Florence.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
