Gertrude was born in September 1889 in Darcy Lever.1  Gertrude's father was John Thomas Clayton and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Stott.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Stott and Mary Lomax. She had a brother and a sister, named Norman and Florence.  She was the oldest of the three children.
