Emma was born in September 1856 in Oldham.1  Emma's father was John Buckley and her mother was Jane Field or Peel.  Her paternal grandparents were Abner Buckley and Sarah Needham. She had three brothers and a sister, named Abner, John, Isaac and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the five children.
