Joseph was born about 1827 in Kirkburton and his baptism took place there on October 5th, 1828.1  Joseph's father was Jonathan Brook and his mother was Betty Moorhouse. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Isaac, Jonadab, William, Thomas, Harriet and Ruth.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
