Thomas was born in March 1870 in Congleton.1  Thomas' father was Edwin Brereton and his mother was Mary Ann Tobin. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Ernest, James, George, Alfred, John, Mary, Ann, Emma and Bertha.  Mary and Thomas were twins.
