Alfred was born in December 1872 in Congleton.1  Alfred's father was Edwin Brereton and his mother was Mary Ann Tobin. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Ernest, James, George, Thomas, John, Mary, Ann, Emma and Bertha.  Ann and Alfred were twins.
