Margaret's father was John Brereton and her mother was Dorothy Browne. Her paternal grandparents were Sir John Brereton and Lady Anne Fyton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the six children.
