James' father was Hugh Brereton Jnr and his mother was Mary Criton.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Brereton and Mary Withers. He had a brother and three sisters, named George, Hannah, Ann and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 23 in September 1783 in Walgherton.  He was buried on September 24th, 1783 in Wybunbury.¹
