Edwin was born in November 1830 in Audlem and his baptism took place there on November 21st, 1830.1 2  Edwin's father was George Brereton and his mother was Sarah Fearns.  His paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Elizabeth Salmon. He had three brothers named Henry, Francis and Edward.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at 8 months old in July 1831 in Audlem.  He was buried on July 9th, 1831 in Audlem.3
