Edward was born in September 1837 in Audlem.1  Edward's father was George Brereton and his mother was Sarah Fearns.  His paternal grandparents were John Brereton and Elizabeth Salmon. He had three brothers named Henry, Edwin and Francis.  He was the youngest of the four children.
