Bertram was born on March 2nd, 1872 in Audlem and his baptism took place there on September 1st, 1872.1 2  Bertram's father was William Brereton Jnr and his mother was Sarah Ann Fleet.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Elizabeth Whittingham. He had two brothers named William and Edward.  He was the youngest of the three children.  He died at the age of 77 on February 20th, 1950.3

‌Bertram and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony in March 1898 in Ormskirk.4   They had a daughter named Elsie.  There are no more children.
