Rachel's father was James Booth and his mother was Rachael Horrocks.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Booth and Catherine (Kat) Holt. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Lawrence, James, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 77 in December 1884 in Bolton.²
