John's father was Henry Bentley and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Blackburn. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Bentley and Jenny (Jane) Mather. He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James and Ethel. He was the second youngest of the four known children.
