Maria's father was Benjamin Bennett and her mother was Elizabeth Millington.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Elizabeth Piercy; her maternal grandparents were John Millington and Margaret Youd. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Edward, John, Benjamin, Jonathan, Ann, Elizabeth, Margaret, Rachel and Mary.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
