Maria was born in February 1792 in Shotton and her baptism took place on February 12th, 1792 in Hawarden.1 2  Maria's father was Benjamin Bennett and her mother was Elizabeth Millington.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Elizabeth Piercy; her maternal grandparents were John Millington and Margaret Youde. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Edward, John, Benjamin, Jonathan, Ann, Elizabeth, Margaret, Rachel and Mary.  She was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
