John's father was Benjamin Bennett and his mother was Elizabeth Millington.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Elizabeth Piercy; his maternal grandparents were John Millington and Margaret Youd. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Edward, Benjamin, Jonathan, Ann, Maria, Elizabeth, Margaret, Rachel and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 78 in March 1868 in Holywell.²
