Ethel was born on January 7th, 1881 in Marylebone, Middlesex. Ethel's father was Charles Walter Bedding and her mother was Jane Sarah Rosser. Her paternal grandparents were Mathew Edward Bedding and Dinah Malverne or Melvin; her maternal grandparents were William Rosser and Mary. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Walter, Fred, Charles, Arthur, Albert, Percy, Gertrude and Florence. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
