George was born in 1841. George's father was Richard Battarbee and his mother was Mary Johnson. His paternal grandparents were George Batarbee and Mary Richards. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Federick, Fanny, Maria and Louisa. He was the second youngest of the six known children.
