Mary was born about 1847 in Flintshire.1  Mary's father was George Batho and her mother was Elizabeth Kirkham.  Her paternal grandparents were George Batho and Martha Cartwright. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Martha and Lizzie.  She was the oldest of the four children.
