William was born in July 1863 in Bolton and his baptism took place on August 2nd, 1863 at Bolton Holy Trinity.1  William's father was George Bateman and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joshua, John, Margaret, Elizabeth and Maria.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 2 in December 1865 in Bolton.  His burial was in December 1865 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.2 3
