Maria was born in March 1874 in Bolton.¹

Maria's father was George Bateman and her mother was Elizabeth Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Joshua Mather and Elizabeth Kay. She had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Joshua, John, Margaret and Elizabeth. She was the second youngest of the six children.
