Thomas' father was James Barnes and his mother was Mary Bolton. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Bolton and Mary Whitaker. He had a brother and four sisters, named George, Maria, Mary, Harriet and Mary. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 1 on January 1st, 1845 in Bolton. His burial was on January 1st, 1845 in Bolton.²¹
