Jane was born in February 1831 in Ashworth and her baptism took place on April 17th, 1831 in Heywood.1 2  Jane's father was John Barlow and her mother was Mary Meaden. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Robert, John, Ann, Sally, Rachael, Mary, Margaret and Susanna .  She was the youngest of the nine children.
