William was born in September 1888 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.1  William's father was John Askew and his mother was Anna (Annie) Westpfahl.  His maternal grandparents were Heinrich Christian Frederick  Westpfahl and (Juliane) Charlotte Focke. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Dora and Florence.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
