Florence was born in October 1890 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.1  Florence's father was John Askew and her mother was Anna (Annie) Westpfahl.  Her maternal grandparents were Heinrich Christian Frederick  Westpfahl and (Juliane) Charlotte Focke. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, William and Dora.  She was the youngest of the four children.
