Laura was born in 1896 in Birkenhead.1 Laura's father was Frederick Ashley and her mother was Phoebe Elizabeth Miller. Her maternal grandparents were John Miller and Phoebe Haddock. She had a brother and three sisters, named Frederick, Lizzie or Liz, Florrie and Clara. She was the oldest of the five children.-
