William was born on February 21st, 1897.  William's father was Andrew Hewat and his mother was Elizabeth Usher.  His maternal grandfather was George Usher and his maternal grandmother is Caroline Gaisford. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Andrew, Ronald, Lionel, Gwendoline, Amy, Jesse , Evelyn, Blanche and Gladys.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 21 in 1918.
