Jan was born on October 8th, 1893.  Jan's father was Roelof  Gerhardus Petrus Martens and his mother is Mary  Elzabeth Mac Kenzie.  His paternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Dewald, Howard, Mary, Anna, Phyllis and Ruby.  He is the oldest of the seven children.
