Anna was born in 1897.  Anna's father was Roelof  Gerhardus Petrus Martens and her mother is Mary  Elzabeth Mac Kenzie.  Her paternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Jan, Dewald, Howard, Mary, Phyllis and Ruby.  She is the third oldest of the seven children.
