Dewald was born on June 16th, 1895.  Dewald's father was Dewald Johannes Martens and his mother is Anna Margaretha Frederika van Rooyen.  His paternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Jan, John, Lukas , Isabella and Anna.  He is the third youngest of the six children.
