Joseph Lewis was born in 1878.  Joseph Lewis' father was William Washington Van Winkle and his mother was Louetta Azbill.  His maternal grandparents were James Azbill and Mahala Jane Bicknell.  He was the third of nine children.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Albert, James A., Roy, Arilza, Wilma, Mahala, Ann and Minnie.  He died at the age of 43 in 1921.
