Klaas was born on July 9th, 1820 in Nijensleek.1  Klaas' father was Harm Jans Veenstra and his mother was Geesjen Klaassen Haveman.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Pieters Veenstra and Hendrikje Egberts; his maternal grandparents were Klaas Jans Haveman and Aaltje Alberts Fokken. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Jan Harms, Egbert, Berend, Hendrika and Aaltje.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
