Egbert was born on December 9th, 1822 in Nijensleek.1  Egbert's father was Harm Jans Veenstra and his mother was Geesjen Klaassen Haveman.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Pieters Veenstra and Hendrikje Egberts; his maternal grandparents were Klaas Jans Haveman and Aaltje Alberts Fokken. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Jan Harms, Klaas, Berend, Hendrika and Aaltje.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
