Aaltje was born on November 9th, 1815 in Nijensleek.1  Aaltje's father was Harm Jans Veenstra and her mother was Geesjen Klaassen Haveman.  Her paternal grandparents were Jan Pieters Veenstra and Hendrikje Egberts; her maternal grandparents were Klaas Jans Haveman and Aaltje Alberts Fokken. She had four brothers and a sister, named Jan Harms, Klaas, Egbert, Berend and Hendrika.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
