Derk Jan was born about 1917. Derk Jan's father was Arend Mulderij (dagloner) and his mother was Catharina Boesveld.  His paternal grandparents were Berend Mulderij (dagloner) and Hendrika Lankwerden; his maternal grandparents were Gart Jan Boesveld (dienstknecht) and Berendina Engbers. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Gart Jan, Berend, Arend, Hendrika, Berendina, Catharina and Arendina.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
