Berend was born on December 19th, 1830 in Brummen.1  Berend's father was Hendrik Mulderij (boerenknecht) and his mother was Maria Verbeek.  His paternal grandparents were Berend Mulderij and Berendina Egberts; his maternal grandparents were Lammert Verbeek and Reintjen ter Beek.  He was an only child.
