Arend was born on January 25th, 1876 in Steenderen (Bronckhorst).1  Arend's father was Berend Mulderij (dagloner) and his mother was Hendrika Lankwerden.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Mulderij (boerenknecht) and Maria Verbeek; his maternal grandparents were Evert Langwarden (dienstknecht) and Maria Aleida Bartels (dienstmeid). He had two brothers and five sisters, named Berend, Derk Jan, Maria Aleida, Reintje, Everdina, Hendrika and Berendina Wilhelmina.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 73 on March 15th, 1949 in Hengelo.2
