Hermannus was born on February 10th, 1848.  Hermannus' father was Hermannus van der Sel and his mother was Gerridina Stil.  His paternal grandparents were Karel van der Sel and Elisabeth van Oorschot. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Carel, Lambert, Elisabeth, Janna and Carolina Gerridina.  He was the second youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 23 on March 2nd, 1871.
