Carel was born on June 24th, 1845.  Carel's father was Hermannus van der Sel and his mother was Gerridina Stil.  His paternal grandparents were Karel van der Sel and Elisabeth van Oorschot. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Hermannus, Lambert, Elisabeth, Janna and Carolina Gerridina.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 5 on September 9th, 1850.
