Hermannus was born on March 18th, 1815 in Zwolle.1  Hermannus' father was Karel van der Sel and his mother was Elisabeth van Oorschot. He had a brother and a sister, named Albertus  and Geziena Alberta.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 53 on November 6th, 1868 in Zwolle.2
