Aafje was born in 1845.  Aafje's father was Cornelis Kool and her mother was Aafje Aker.  Her paternal grandparents were Frederik Kool and Trijntje Nijman; her maternal grandparents were Pieter Aker and Lijsbeth Tjerks de Vries. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Pieter, Cornelis, Trijntje and Betje.  She was the youngest of the five children.
