Pieter was born on July 9th, 1710.  Pieter's father was Jacob Pietersz Groot and his mother was Geertje Jans.  His paternal grandfather was Pieter Groot. He had a brother and five sisters, named Jan, Diewertje, Diewertje , Neeltje , Maartje and Lijsbet .  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named Sijmon.
